Nancy Patricia Pelosi (née D’Alesandro)

Mar. 26, 1940

American politician, first female speaker of the US House of Representatives (2007-2011, 2019 - )

After a childhood in Maryland in a political family, Nancy moved to San Francisco, got involved in Democratic politics, and formed a friendship with Phillip Burton, the 5th District Congressman. Pelosi won his seat in 1987 and has kept it since then. Nancy was an opponent of the Iraq war and the Bush administration’s attempt to privatize social security. During the Obama administration she helped pass the Affordable Care Act; the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act; Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell; American Recovery and Reinvestment Act; and the 2010 Tax Relief Act. Pelosi announced the Impeachment Hearings of Donald Trump in 2019. During the 2018-2019 federal government shutdown Pelosi declined to allow Trump to give his State of the Union Speech in the House. Nancy has consistently supported civil liberties and human rights throughout her career and continues to call for action to curb climate change
