Mae Carol Jemison

American engineer, physician, and astronaut.

Jemison became the first African American to go into space as a specialist on the Space Shuttle Endeavor in 1992. Mae did her undergrad at Stanford then earned her MD. at Cornell. She served as a doctor in the Peace Corps in Liberia and Sierra Leone, 1993-1995. 

Jemison joined NASA in 1987-1993. After NASA, Jemison formed a tech research company and a foundation which developed the project The Earth We Share, a science camp for students. Jemison was a professor of environmental studies at Dartmouth College as well as a professor at large for Cornell University. Jemison has written several books for children related to science and continues to be an active public speaker promoting science and technology.
