American activist, civil rights leader, author, and wife of Martin Luther King Jr.  

Coretta, a classically trained singer, gave up her career to marry MLK. While in college, she became involved in the NAACP. After getting married she used her singing skills to connect to the people and the cause. With the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott, King and her family became the focus of many threats. After the MLK assassination, Coretta assumed a leadership role in the Civil Rights Movement. She founded the King Center for nonviolent movement for justice in 1968. King called for women to get more involved in fighting. The injustices of racism, poverty, women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, apartheid, and world peace.
